An asphalt overlay is simply the process of installing a new layer of hot mix asphalt directly over existing asphalt on road surfaces or car parks etc.
This process is applied if the old asphalt starts to produces fine cracking due to old age. The old surface is first cleaned and swept and the cracks are sealed with our bitumen crack sealing process. Once the prep work has been carried out the asphalt overlay is applied.
This is a more cost effective process to resurfacing as the original asphalt is kept intact and doesn't need to be cut and lifted out. This overlay process however can only be achieved if the original surface is reasonably intact to get the best life possible out of an asphalt overlay.
Asphalt overlay is not always a viable option. In situations such as significant structural deterioration, an inadequate sub-base, poor drainage conditions, or areas that have been resurfaced several times previously, resurfacing may not be advisable. In other cases, resurfacing can only be recommended when combined with options such as grinding, the addition of geotextile fabric, or full-depth repairs.
