Potholes are formed due to fatigue of the road surface. As fatigue fractures develop they typically interlock in a pattern known as crocodile cracking. The chunks of pavement between fatigue cracks are worked loose and may eventually be picked out of the surface by continued traffic loads, which then becomes a pothole.
These potholes once formed can create a real hazard and become a danger to both pedestrians and motorists. Potholes can come in all shapes and sizes and some can be quite deep too. If they become large enough, damage to wheel, tires and suspensions can and do occur. Serious road accidents can occur as a direct result, especially on motorways where speed limits are greater. Potholes are almost invisible to road users.
The images to the left show an example of crocodile cracking and then the formation of a pothole. Seeing this particular image of a pothole one can understand the dangers these can pose and this is just a small version of a pothole.
Getting a pothole repaired is a small price to pay compared to the possibility of a lawsuit if a pedestrian trips walking into it or a motorist drives through it and damages their car or worse still has an accident causing serious injury.
